Heart Screening Program for School Children – Lalitpur District
On July 15, 2026, Nepal Heart Foundation (NHF), in coordination with the Nepal Heart Foundation Lalitpur Branch, and CSR project of Standard Chartered Bank conducted a heart screening program for school children in Lalitpur district.
A total of 2,223 students from two schools participated in the screening:
- Adarsha Soula Yubak Secondary School, Bungamati – 1,789 students
- Shree Jana Udaya Secondary School, Bhainsipati – 484 students
The program aimed to facilitate the early detection of congenital heart disease (CHD) among school-going children, particularly those who may have limited access to specialized cardiac services.
The initial screening was conducted using stethoscopes, with doctors carefully listening for abnormal heart sounds and murmurs that could indicate an underlying heart condition. Students with suspected abnormalities were then referred for further assessment using a portable echocardiography machine, allowing the medical team to examine the structure and function of the heart in greater detail.
A total of 224 students underwent echocardiographic examination and the suspected cases were further evaluated by Dr. Prakash Raj Regmi.
The screening program identified 4 students with congenital heart disease (CHD). Among these four diagnosed cases, 2 students required further investigation and were referred to Nepal Heart Clinic, Sanepa, for specialized evaluation and possible intervention.
The program successfully reached 2,223 school children and provided access to cardiac screening in their school environment.
The early identification of 4 children with congenital heart disease represents an important outcome, as timely diagnosis can facilitate appropriate treatment and prevent complications associated with undiagnosed heart conditions.
