Heart Attack Prevention
The Nepal Heart Foundation (NHF) has been working extensively to reduce the rising burden of heart attacks through its Heart Attack Prevention and Control Program. Recognizing that heart attacks are a major cause of mortality and morbidity in Nepal, the program is designed to promote awareness, early detection, and preventive measures at both the individual and community levels.
One of the core strategies of this program is awareness raising, which is conducted through a variety of channels to ensure maximum reach and impact. NHF organizes public lectures, educational symposiums, and community talks aimed at informing people about the causes, risk factors, and prevention of heart attacks. Additionally, the program utilizes audio-visual tools, such as short video clippings, informative television programs, and catchy promotional jingles, to communicate heart health messages in an engaging and accessible manner.

To support lifestyle changes, NHF actively promotes heart-friendly habits and stress-free living. Practical tips and resources are shared to encourage individuals to adopt a balanced diet, increase physical activity, manage stress, and avoid harmful behaviors like smoking. The foundation also emphasizes the importance of yoga, meditation, and relaxation techniques, especially in high-stress populations, as effective tools for maintaining heart health.
A key focus area of the program is the early identification and management of risk factors associated with coronary artery disease. These include high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar levels (diabetes), high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, and chronic stress. NHF conducts heart camps in various regions, where individuals are screened for these risk factors, and provided with counseling, lifestyle guidance, and referrals for medical care when needed. These camps are held regularly and have proven especially effective in reaching populations in both urban and remote rural areas.
Importantly, this program is inclusive, addressing the needs of both men and women across all age groups. By educating the public and providing access to preventive health services, the program empowers individuals to take proactive steps toward protecting their heart health.
In addition to its community-level interventions, NHF has also been actively involved in policy advocacy. The foundation recently successfully completed a project focused on the elimination of trans-fats in food products—an initiative targeted specifically at preventing heart attacks among youth. Through collaboration with government agencies and stakeholders, NHF contributed to the development and implementation of trans-fat elimination policies and legal frameworks, marking a significant step forward in public health nutrition and cardiovascular disease prevention.
Through these multifaceted efforts, NHF continues to play a critical role in reducing the incidence of heart attacks in Nepal and fostering a healthier, heart-conscious society.
