In Nepal, over 1,000 children tragically lose their lives to Rheumatic Heart disease each year. More than 100,000 individuals are currently living with damaged heart valves, facing a lifetime of pain, limited mobility, and economic hardship. Additionally, approximately 1,000 patients require heart surgery annually due to complications arising from RHD.
RHD is mostly restricted to children, especially from the poor, poor and marginalized populations, disadvantaged groups, and from remote areas. Prevention and disease control were not appropriately prioritized by government. Due to a lack of information and access to early diagnosis and treatment, some children continue to suffer from irreversible heart damage or premature death. Given the disease burden in poor populations, the World Health Organization (WHO) has labeled RHD as a “Neglected Heart Disease of the Poor.”
RHD normally develops when infections such as pharyngitis and tonsillitis are poorly treated, leading to inflammation and long-term damage of heart valves. But the disease can be cured and prevented if it is found and treated early. People need to be made aware of the importance of taking proper care in throat infection among children. Furthermore, in the case of already diagnosed RHD children, simple intramuscular penicillin every three weeks is equally capable of halting disease advancement. Sadly, however, such udimentary procedures are not uniformly applied across the nation.
In response, the Nepal Heart Foundation has launched the “END RHD Campaign” with the ambitious goal of eliminating RHD from Nepal and reducing its impact by 50% by the year 2030. As part of this national initiative, we have established a dedicated RHD Research Fund, with a fundraising target of NPR 100 million. The interest generated from this fund will be used to support research, awareness campaigns, and preventive programs to combat RHD across Nepal.
