Go Red for Women Program
The Go Red for Women program is a significant initiative of the Nepal Heart Foundation (NHF), designed to address the unique cardiovascular health challenges faced by women—particularly those in the pre- and post-menopausal stages of life. This group is at a significantly higher risk for developing coronary artery disease, hypertension, heart attacks, and strokes, yet often remains underdiagnosed and underserved due to limited awareness and gender disparities in healthcare access.

Globally, heart disease is the leading cause of death among women, and Nepal is no exception. The hormonal changes that occur during and after menopause—such as the decline in estrogen levels—are known to negatively affect cardiovascular health. Despite these risks, many women remain unaware of the symptoms of heart disease, which often differ from those experienced by men. In women, signs of heart attack may be more subtle, such as fatigue, shortness of breath, or jaw and back pain, making early detection even more challenging.
The Go Red for Women program was launched with the aim of filling this gap by raising awareness, promoting early screening, and advocating for lifestyle changes tailored to women’s heart health. The program encourages women to adopt heart-healthy behaviors, such as engaging in regular physical activity, eating a balanced diet, managing stress, avoiding tobacco, and undergoing regular health check-ups for blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels.
To date, NHF Central Office and its district branches have initiated a range of educational and awareness activities, including health talks, workshops, media campaigns, and interactive sessions with women’s groups. These activities aim to empower women with knowledge about their own heart health and to break the cultural silence that often surrounds women’s health issues in Nepal.
However, despite its importance and potential impact, the implementation of this gender-specific program has faced significant challenges, primarily due to a lack of dedicated funding. Both the central and branch-level offices of NHF have struggled to sustain the momentum of the program. Limited financial resources have hindered the ability to expand outreach, conduct regular screenings, and scale up targeted interventions in rural and underserved areas where the need is often greatest.
NHF is actively seeking partnerships with national and international organizations, donors, and governmental bodies to mobilize resources and broaden the reach of the Go Red for Women campaign. With adequate support, this program has the potential to become a national movement that not only saves lives but also uplifts the status of women’s health in Nepal.
The Go Red for Women initiative is more than just a health campaign—it is a call to action to prioritize women’s cardiovascular health, empower them with knowledge, and ensure they receive the care and attention they deserve.
