Rehabilitation of Heart Patients

Among the various national programs run by the Nepal Heart Foundation (NHF), the Rehabilitation of Heart Patients program remains one of the least developed but equally vital components. Rehabilitation is a critical phase in the continuum of care for heart patients—particularly those who have undergone major cardiac events, surgeries, or interventions and its importance is growing as survival rates improve due to medical advancements.

Recognizing this gap, NHF, in partnership with The Heart Club, a dedicated non-governmental organization working in cardiac care, has been making progressive efforts to build a structured rehabilitation initiative. While the program is still in its formative stages, initial activities have focused on counseling services and experience-sharing sessions aimed at supporting heart patients in
their recovery journey and enabling them to live fulfilling lives post-treatment.

These sessions provide a platform for patients to discuss their experiences, voice their concerns, and gain practical insights on managing physical, emotional, and lifestyle-related challenges. Psychosocial support plays a central role here, helping patients cope with anxiety, depression, and fear of recurrence–common issues among those who have undergone serious procedures like angioplasty, bypass surgery, or valve replacement.

In addition to emotional and psychological support, the program aims to promote long-term lifestyle modifications such as heart-friendly diets, physical activity routines, stress management techniques, and
adherence to medications. NHF is also working toward developing a more structured cardiac rehabilitation protocol in collaboration with health professionals and physiotherapists, though resource limitations continue to be a challenge.

A promising recent development in this program is the inclusion of activities focused on senior citizen rehabilitation. Older adults who suffer from heart disease often face additional complexities related
to mobility, comorbidities, and social isolation. NHF’s initiative now aims to integrate senior-specific care plans that address these broader needs and support a dignified, active life post-cardiac treatment.

Another important inclusion under this program is the Dr. M.R. Pandey CAD Reversal Initiative, which promotes the reversal and management of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) through holistic approaches. This component of the program emphasizes non-invasive strategies such as dietary changes, regular physical activity, stress reduction, and natural therapies—that aim to improve vascular health and potentially reverse early-stage heart disease.

Although the rehabilitation program is still underdeveloped compared to NHF’s other national efforts, the foundation is committed to expanding it through partnerships, research, and pilot projects. With increased awareness, funding, and professional collaboration, NHF envisions a future where comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation becomes an integral part of every heart patient’s recovery in Nepal ensuring not just survival, but a meaningful return to life.
