Echo Screening of Children, Belkotgadhi, Nuwakot

Activities Description

On September 3, 4, and 5, 2025, the Nepal Heart Foundation, in coordination with NHF Nuwakot Branch, conducted echocardiography screenings in Nuwakot district. A total of 2,539 students from 11 schools were examined using the echocardiography machine. The screening identified 37 positive cases of which 6 cases are of Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) and 31 cases are of Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) in Nuwakot district. All cases were evaluated by a team of specialists, including Dr. Prakash Raj Regmi, Dr. Urmila Shakya, and Dr. Ram Kishore Shah6 CHD cases requiring surgical/device intervention were referred to Sahid Gangalal National Heart Centre (SGNHC) and 2 RHD cases were given penicillin VK tablets.

Outcomes/Impact

A total of 2539 echocardiography of students from 11 schools in Nuwakot district underwent screenings, resulting in the identification of 37 positive cases with heart disease (6 RHD and 31 CHD). Outcome: All screened students were assessed for heart conditions, and the 6 cases with CHD were referred for further treatment at SGNHC, 2 students were given medication ensuring timely medical intervention. Impact: The program increased awareness of heart health among students, teachers, and guardians, contributed to the prevention of childhood heart disease, strengthened community health initiatives, and supported Nepal’s national efforts to reduce the burden of childhood diseases.
